Prevention first. Treatment with realistic timelines. No miracle language — ever.
Most skincare marketing shouts at 25-year-olds. Plenishing is written for skin after 50 — thinner, drier, slower to renew, and far less forgiving of harsh products — and it grades every claim before it repeats it.
Prevention: stop new damage
Daily broad-spectrum sun protection is the single best-evidenced anti-wrinkle step in dermatology. In the Nambour randomised trial, daily sunscreen users showed 24% less skin aging over 4.5 years than discretionary users — it slowed new damage, it did not reverse old wrinkles.
Wrinkles — rhytids, in clinical language — respond measurably to retinoids over 3–12 months, and to very little else in a jar. We show the evidence, the timelines, and the limits.
Skin after 50 has its own rules — and its own strengths.
The honest core routine
The routine that survives evidence grading is short: gentle cleanser + plain fragrance-free moisturizer + broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning + a retinoid a few nights a week, if tolerated. Everything else is an optional extra on top of that spine — never a replacement for it.
Start here — before buying anything new
Cleanse gently once in the evening; rinse with lukewarm water in the morning if you are very dry
Moisturize on damp skin, within minutes of washing
Apply a full two-finger amount of SPF 30+ to face and neck, plus the backs of your hands, every morning
Give the core routine two settled weeks before adding any active — one at a time, weeks apart
What actually changes after 50
Change
What it means day to day
Plenishing response
Collagen loss — up to ~30% in the first 5 years after menopause, then ~2% a year
Skin thins, fine lines deepen, firmness drops
Retinoids (strongest evidence) + daily SPF to protect remaining collagen
Slower cell turnover — roughly 28 days in your 20s, 45–60+ days by your 50s–60s
Dull, flat, rough texture; makeup settles into lines
Gentle lactic-acid exfoliation 1–2 nights a week — never daily scrubbing
Less oil, altered ceramides, more water loss
Tight, itchy, flaky skin, especially in winter
Ceramide + petrolatum barrier care; short lukewarm showers
Cumulative UV damage
Age spots, uneven tone, deeper wrinkles, precancerous patches
